On Sunday 8th
June 2008 Hexham travelled to Bullocksteads to play in this
years Soccer 7s tournament along with many local teams, as well
as some from further a field. As the name suggests, the
competition was played in mini soccer format with four opening
league fixtures followed by a series of nail biting knockout
rounds. They went on to show their class in the quarter finals and semi finals, dominating both games against determined and defensive Longhoughton and Cramlington Cobras. Despite Hexham's dominance, they missed a number of great opportunities to seal the game and both were to be decided through a penalty shootout. Hexham keeper Jake Holt showed his quality in saving all three penalties to guide his side to a 2-0 shootout win against Longhoughton. The top stopper then went on to save two of Cramlington's four penalties in the semi-final to relieve the pressure on his team mates who did not disappoint, winning 3-2. They went on to have perhaps their best performance of the day against Whitley Coast Soccer in the final. Lewis Forster capped his man of the match performance by scoring the winning goal to complete a fantastic sweeping team move. It was the perfect finish to Hexham's excellent day. |
